The Department of Ecology and Natural Resources is a structural subdivision of the Regional State Administration, subordinated to the Head of the Regional State Administration, accountable and is under the control of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine.

The main tasks of the Department include the implementation of state policy and management within Lviv region in the spheres:

protection of the natural environment, rational use, reproduction and
protection of natural resources (subsoil, land, surface and underground waters, water bodies, atmospheric air, forests, animals (including aquatic living resources, hunting and non-hunting species of animals), plantage and natural resources of territorial waters);
waste management (except hazardous and radioactive waste management);
formation, preservation of the ecological network, protection and development of the territories networks and objects of the nature reserve fund, preservation, reproduction and tireless use of biological and landscape diversity;
preservation of the ozone layer, regulation of the negative anthropogenic impact on climate change and adaptation to its changes and fulfilment within the competence of the requirements of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change;
implementation of environmental impact assessment and strategic environmental assessment of informing the population through mass media about the state of the natural environment in the relevant territory.
